Review – Cold Magic by Kate Elliott

Cold MagicWhat a pleasant surprise!  During one of my wandering visits at Barnes and Noble, I found an interesting book – Cold Steel.  I almost picked it up and then saw that it was the third book in a series.  My OCD will not let me read books out-of-order so I looked and looked for Cold Magic.  Imagine my disappointment when it was not in stock.  So, I immediately came home and searched Amazon.  Score – not only was it in stock but it was on clearance.  Two days later I had it in my hands.

I will admit that I had a hard time getting into Cold Magic.  “When are we going to see some action?”  The magic of this story is that even though I was feeling a little frustrated, I just could not put it down.  I kept reading because I was drawn into the world and wanted to know all about the characters and their story.

Cat and her cousin, Bee, are college students and best friends.  It’s the start of the Industrial Revolution (but this is a different world than we live in.)  Magic is still in play and Cat has a little of her own.  When Cat becomes part of a power play with the Cold Mages, she finds that she has been betrayed and lied to by almost everyone.

Cat is a strong female protagonist and I especially loved that she doesn’t really back down to anything.  She keeps taking punches and just works to find a way to survive, both physically and emotionally.  Her relationship with Bee makes her stronger and their bond defines much of her life.

Andevai, you are quite frustrating.  It’s hard to determine if we should love or hate you.  Cat definitely has work ahead of her if you guys are going to make anything of this relationship.  SPOILER: I am growing tired of love stories featuring a woman falling for a man who has tried, wants or is hired to kill her.  Is this the only way to create conflict?  Yes, stories should take us outside of reality but, in the real world, you stay far, far away from someone who wants you dead.

I’m giving this one 4/5 stars.  Loved the story even though it did take a little while to grow on me.  I also enjoyed the mix of technology and magic.  Looking forward to the next in the series.
